How To Play Texas Hold‘em

Variations

Your first decision is to choose between the four common varieties of the game. The options are between Limit, No Limit, Mixed, and Pot Limit.

• Limit: You are only allowed 4 bets per round.
• No Limit: You are not limited to a specified number of raises or amount of chips.
• Mixed: The game alternates between the Limit and No Limit variant.
• Pot Limit: You must bet at least the size of the Big Blind (more on this later), and you are not restricted to a particular number of raises.

The Who’s Who: Blinds

Dealer: this is the player who will be the dealer in the game.
Small Blind: it is the player sitting to the left of the dealer and who decides the minimum bet.
Big Blind: this is the player who is seated to the left of the small blind and usually doubles the small blind’s bet.

Burn And Turn, Baby!

The game gets played with a standard 52-deck of cards. Once you have placed your bet according to the variation you are playing, the dealer will issue all players with 2 face-down pocket cards (or hole cards). Now the dealer will deal the community cards face-up in a line on the table. The first three face-up cards are called The Flop. The card is called The Turn, and the last one is The River.

The aim of the game is for you to use your two pocket cards (which only you can see) plus the 5 community cards (which all can see), to build the best 5-card hand and beat all other players.

Chips away!

After dealing The Flop, the betting commences. You now have the following options as each community card gets dealt:

Bet: place an increased bet, which all players must meet to the pot to remain active
Check: take no action but stay in the game
Call: match the previous bet to remain active (also called ‘in the hand’)
Raise: match a bet from another player and increase it for all players
Fold: throw in your cards and quit that game

Once all players have called a ‘check’ or the last bettor has raised, bet or folded, and there is more than one player still in the game, it is time for the Showdown. Active players show their best collective hand from their 2x hole cards and the 5x community card, and the player who ranks the highest 5-card hand wins the pot.

Hand Rankings (From High To Low)

Royal Flush: The 10-card plus the Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of the same suit (diamonds, clubs, hearts or spades)
Straight Flush: Same-suit cards in a sequential numerical order
Four of a Kind: Four identical cards of different suits plus a kicker-card (more on this later)
Full House: 2x Matching rank cards and 3x matching rank cards
Flush: 5x Cards of the same suit which are not sequential
Straight: Differently suited cards in a sequential numerical order
Three of a Kind: 3x Cards of the same rank and 2x separate cards
Two Pairs: 2x Cards of the same rank and 2x of another ranking plus a kicker-card
Pair: 2x Cards of the same ranking and 3x different cards
High Card: This is the highest card in your 5-card hand.

Should more than one contestant have the same hand ranking at the end of the game, then the kicker-card determines the winner. The kicker card is a winner when it has a higher ranking in the deck.
